World AIDS Day
This World AIDS Day we honor those whom we’ve lost in the fight against HIV while looking forward to the future—a world without HIV. The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted years’ worth of efforts to ramp up HIV testing, treatment and prevention across the globe. Meanwhile, HIV infections and other sexually transmitted infections remain high here in Texas.
Through the years to the present day the CommUnityCare David Powell Health Center has remained committed to providing high-quality whole person care to the communities that we serve. Since the early days of the HIV epidemic David Powell health center has provided care to marginalized communities who had been excluded from traditional health systems and we have stood by our patients and our community during some of the darkest days of the HIV epidemic. Today, reflecting the changing nature of the HIV epidemic, we not only are committed to providing HIV primary care but comprehensive sexual health services centered on prevention, wellness, and personal fulfillment.
We recognize that the HIV epidemic continues to disproportionately impact LGBTQ+, black and Latino communities. If we are to end the HIV epidemic then bridging the health equity gap will remain the great challenge of our time. Access to medications alone is not enough. We recognize that if we want our patients to thrive then we need to work together to ensure that other basic needs are met—affordable housing and transportation, healthy foods, supportive and safe communities, and a medical home that affirms all people regardless of they are or who they love. We encourage everyone to do their part and get tested, know your status, and consider ways to protect yourself and your loved ones.
